  1. QUICKSTART GUIDE: Getting Started with CompuPic(TM) (CPIC)

  4. When you start CPIC, you will see a small window in the center
  5. of the screen with a short TIP.  READ THEM!  These tips really
  6. help you, and may point out many things that you may not know.
  7.  
  8. On the left side of the CompuPic screen is the Path List. This
  9. list shows the directories on your machine similar to the way
  10. the File Manager does. Click on a directory where you have
  11. graphics files and the associated files appear in the File
  12. List on the right side of the screen.
  13.  
  14.   HINT: If you use CompuServe or America Online, graphics
  15.   files are probably stored in the DOWNLOAD directory under
  16.   AOL or CSERVE, whichever is appropriate.

  18. Once files have appeared, the best thing to do is create
  19. thumbnail images so you can see a small version of each
  20. picture. Click on the CREATE button with the picture of the
  21. thumb on it (in the toolbar across the top.) CPIC immediately
  22. begins making the small thumbnail images, and should start
  23. displaying them as they are completed.

  25. If you prefer larger thumbnails, or no thumbnails at all,
  26. click repeatedly on the FILE LIST button to see the different
  27. sizes available.

  29.   HINT: Larger thumbnails take up more room on your hard-
  30.   drive, so you might want to stick with the smaller ones if
  31.   you are conserving your hard disk.

  33. It isn't necessary to wait for all the thumbnails to be
  34. created. CPIC does this quietly in the background, leaving you
  35. free to do other things -- like look at more pictures!
  36.  
  37. Double-click on any file in the list, or highlight one and
  38. click on the VIEW button. CPIC will display it on the screen.
  39. Click the left mouse button or the ESC key on your keyboard to
  40. return to the main window.

  42. CPIC offers extensive controls for changing the way a picture
  43. looks. View another image. Move your mouse to the top edge of
  44. the screen while the image is displayed. A menu bar appears
  45. with many options for manipulating the image including Zooming,
  46. Cropping, Rotating and much more. Try some of them.

  48.   Hint: If you make any changes to the image CPIC will keep
  49.   you from accidentally exiting by clicking the left mouse
  50.   button. Use the ESC key to exit and confirm that you want to
  51.   exit without saving.

  53.   Similarly, unless you save an image with the File menu, you
  54.   will not actually be changing the image on the disk.
  55.  
  56. Select a few image files and select Create Picture Index from
  57. the Utilities menu.  CompuPic can easily create the best image
  58. catalogs in the industry.

  60. CPIC uses "MCI Drivers" to play multimedia files.  If you get
  61. a message about MCI drivers, please read the text file called
  62. MCI.TXT (the "MCI Help Information" icon.)

  64. Check for updates to CompuPic in our Photodex areas on-line as
  65. Photodex updates CPIC frequently. You can download, install
  66. and run new versions very quickly.  If you are registered, you
  67. do not have to re-enter your registration information.
